Ghost feet danced through the hallways in the dead of night with the moonlight streaming in through the hallways light skim milk. They danced around in a flurry of soft little thuds until they made it to a door, standing tall above their head and seemingly mocking them as they reached up with only the tips of their toes giving them the extra edge to do so.
They managed to move the knob and enter silently, looking through the dark room where two bodies lay in bed with arms wrapped around one another. She shuffled in unsurely with a stuffed animal hugged close to her rapidly-beating heart and eventually pulled herself up to the nearest body and snuggled close under their arm.
Said person shifted beneath the sheets, pausing a moment before opening their emerald eyes to look towards the small body beside him. The lights flicked on and he examined the young girl's frightened blue eyes now widening with panic mixing in.
The man rubbed his tired eyes then pulled her up into his lap to brush her back slowly. "It's alright Madeline...daddy's not upset with you..." His voice murmured still dripping heavily with sleep. "Tell daddy what's wrong..."
She wrapped her arms around his neck, unexplainably bawling into his nightshirt. He flinched, holding her close in stillness for a moment before jouncing her slightly. "Madeline...honey, tell me what's wrong..."
Beside them, the other awoke slowly with a groan but quickly gained attention at the sound of his child's cries. He propped himself up on his arms, looking towards his partner and daughter with a questionable look. He reached over, taking the girl's favorite stuffed polar bear and mustering a smile.
"My sweet Madeline...what's wrong?" The girl looked over with big tears falling from her eyes. "No, no, no, this will never do! You're face is too precious to be stained by tears!" He lifted the girl into his lap only to find her completely detesting it; squirming to get back into Arthur's arms.
"Maddy...?" Arthur asked silently, hugging the girl close to him silently. "I don't understand what's wrong. You need to tell us..."
"D-Don't bring me back..." She whispered, grabbing much more tightly to his shirt. "I-I don't wanna b-be separated from Amelia..."
"We're not bringing you back sweetie..." He breathed calmly, brushing little circles in her back. "Why are you even worried about something like that honey...?"
"N-Nightmare...!" Then, she started bawling once again. Arthur hugged her close and rocked her in his arms. "I-I don't wanna g-go back a-and be away from Amelia...!" He brushed her arm lightly, letting her snuggle closer,"y-you wanted Amelia...b-but I just...!"
Francis took her again with no fight back while another started scampering through the halls much more frisky than the other's. "Come and tell papa what you're so worried about Madeline..."
"Y-You d-didn't come to get me..." She whimpered, her voice still shaking and hiccups still present. "Y-You wanted A-Amelia...s-so I thought that if you don't like me...I-I'd have to go back..." She shook her head in his shirt as sobs came back again. "I-I'm sorry...!"
"No, don't be sorry..." Francis said with a pain in his voice, lifting the girl so she could easily wrap her arms around his neck. "Maddie, me and Arthur would never bring you back...you're as much as a daughter to us as Amelia is...don't you worry..."
 "B-But-!"
"Maddie..." Francis cut off a tad bit more sternly as someone's head poked in the door. "I know that we meant to adopt Amelia that day but we couldn't separate you from your sister..." He kissed her forehead lightly and brushed her long, golden hair. "And now we have two beautiful girls to love instead of just one..."
 "A-Are you sure...?"
Arthur took her in his arms as the other child crept in cautiously, going to her papa's side and climbing up into his lap. "Of course Maddie..." He murmured into her hairline, letting her snuggle close. "Me and papa love you very much...I don't think either of us could bare it if you were gone..."
 "R-Really...?"
"Mhm..." Amelia moved closer to her sister, raveling her into a hug and nodding into her shoulder. "If they sent you back, I'd go back with you. I can't leave you alone ever. Pinkie promise."
Their pinkie fingers laced together, Madeline still sniffling but smiling faintly along with it. Francis smiled, lifting up the stuffed bear and presenting it to her with a grin. "No more tears tonight, right?" Her head shook 'no.' "Then come sleep with papa. I don't like seeing you so upset. I want you to be smiling and lovey like you always are."
He helped her onto his lap and held her close, brushing some loose strands behind her ear and fixing it up to be more orderly. Already it was showing that she was exhausted from the late night and it didn't take more than a few minutes for her to be under sleeps heavy influence.
Amelia nestled beside her and started drifting off as well, the two parents looking worried towards each other. "Why is the poor girl so afraid of being left behind...?"
"We weren't even adopting her..." Francis brushed her shoulder gently. "She must've been so scared when she found out her only family left was leaving her. All alone in this terrible world..." He brushed the girl's cheek and watched her wrap her arms around the girl's neck.
"You remember the day we adopted her, right...?"
---
They chattered away happily, both young men with such happy thoughts on their mind. The idea that by the end of the day, they'd be parents to a beautiful young girl named Amelia whom them met once or twice on occasion.
Spring; a time of rebirth that seemed to reflect their moods as they walked down the streets with happy feeling welled up in their hearts. Francis paused, noticing a young girl sitting at the side of the road with a gloomy expression. Only then did he see her lower her head and cry into her knees.
"Francis?" Arthur looked over towards the girl and sighed. "You want to go talk with her, don't you?"
 "I'm sorry but-"
Arthur brushed by without much thought, sitting next to the girl and resting an affectionate hand on her shoulder. She looked up at him with watery eyes to see his sheepish smile on his face. "Francis, you go on ahead, alright?" He nodded uncertainly, leaving his lover there with the strange girl with twin tails in her hair. "Wow miss, you have such beautiful eyes."
She turned her head away in resentment. "Oh come now sweetie...why don't you tell me why you're so upset today? It's very beautiful outside-"
"I'm gunna be all alone mister!" She suddenly cried with fists balled up and laying weak little punches on his shoulder. "M-My sister is going away forever and I'm gunna be stuck w-without anyone! A-All alone! I-I don't want to be alone anymore...!" Tears collected up once more and she started sobbing into his lap. "I-I don't w-wanna be alone...!"
Arthur lifted her up in his arms awkwardly, brushing her shoulders and hugging her close. "Are you from the orphanage too...?" She nodded into his shirt. "Do you want to sit out here for a bit with me...?" Again, she nodded and clamped onto his shirt. "Don't worry...someone will take you home too and care and love for you forever..."
 "B-But my sister..."
"She'll be taken very well care of..." He breathed, letting her snuggle close as she calmed down. "Whoever is taking her is sure to give her all the love she needs."
"But I need her..." The girl started again with tears in her eyes. "S-She was always there a-after mama and papa died...I-I don't want to loose her..."
Arthur stood up with her in his arms. "Come on then. I'm sure we can talk to the woman who runs the center about talking to her new parents about this, alright."
The girl smiled a bit, nodding into his shirt. "Thank you mister..."
"Arthur." He smiled, carrying her into the building and looking around for any sign of life. "And you are...?"
 "Madeline..."
 "Such a pretty name miss-"
"Maddie!" Both their heads turned, Amelia standing at the side with Francis and a worker standing there. Just entered in from the other room it seemed. "Maddie!"
Madeline squirmed from Arthur's grip, falling hard on the ground but quickly picking up to rush to his new daughter and enveloping in a tight hug. "A-Amelia, d-don't go!"
The two stood in the middle of the room, bawling in each other's arms (and Madeline now with a bleeding nose). Arthur moved over to Francis, taking his hand as the worker went over. "I'm sorry sirs...Madeline...Amelia needs to go with these nice people now-"
"No! I don't wanna!" She cried, clinging onto her sister tightly as she tried to separate them. "P-Please, she's all I have left...!"
Francis squeezed his hand lightly,"what's going on...?"
"Madeline...she was upset because her sister was being adopted." He looked up with pitiful eyes. "I came back to see if we could talk to the parents about it but...we're her sister's new parents..."
"Well we can't split them up." Francis stammered. "Don't we have enough room for both of them?"
"We could figure something out." Arthur looked back over to see Madeline in the woman's arms, squirming and trying to get her sister. She turned to leave when Arthur spoke up once more. "Please, wait!"
Everyone's gazes fell upon the two, tightly holding each other's hands and staring intently at Madeline. "We can figure something out, non?" Francis started while Arthur kneeled down to have Amelia run in his arm, still shaking. "Far be it from us to break them apart. Surely we can talk this out..."
Madeline sniffled, being let down and clumsily stumbled over too with a disoriented mind. Arthur held them both close and brushed her hair as she blubbered with incoherent words jumbled within. "Please, we would be happy to take Madeline with us too..."
The woman sighed before a smile was replaced. "Alright Mr. Kirkland, Mr. Bonnefoy...let's go back and fill out some more paperwork, alright?"
Amelia and Madeline looked over with a mirroring grin on both of their faces. Madeline hugged her sister's neck and snuggled closely with tears quickly spilling over with happiness. Arthur smiled, standing up and brushing their shoulders calmly. "Come on then...I'll help you pack your things Madeline, alright?"
"Mhm..." She rested her head on Arthur's shoulder, hugging him as she hugged her sister and refusing to let go. "T-Thank you Arthur..."
"You can call me 'daddy' if you want to. You too Amelia..."
They nodded, following where Francis vanished off to.
---
"We weren't actually there to adopt her that day."
"But how dare they expect to split them apart...?" Francis laid down beside her and brushed Madeline's hair calmly while she remained seemingly glued to her sibling. "Madeline must've been so stressed..."
Arthur nodded, laying back down as well and turning the lights off. "Don't worry about them...they'll be alright now that they know they're safe together. I just hope it stays like this..."
Francis chuckled, brushing Arthur's cheek and pressing a chaste kiss to the lips. "Let's get some shut eye as well...good night my handsome Brit..."
"Good night frog..." He breathed with a light blush on his cheeks. "Sweet dreams my lovely girls..."
