"Who the heck are the new trainees?" You asked, turning to your attention to the line of trainees standing in front of the stables. "If they think that they're going to make it here-"

"You should watch what you say," your friend whispered back with eyes glued to the younger teens in front of you. "Those are the kids who graduated with Jeager, the 104th trainees. They've already been in battle...to reclaim Trost, you know."

You scoffed, crossing your arms and looking at them. "Idiots...the whole lot of them. They face that reality and then decide to go outside of the walls. It's amazing they've made it this far along."

"Yes...but all of these trainees ranked from 15 and above." Your head whipped to see the seriousness in your friend's azure eyes. "As unbelievable as it seems these trainees know what they're doing."

"They're insane." You growled with eyes narrowed. "They'll be just the same as the other new trainees that joined this morning and the ones who join tomorrow morning and so on. The only think any of us are meant for is to feed the titans..."

"I don't get you ___________!" She finally snapped as you turned away and started leaving. "Why would you join the Recon Corps if you knew you'd become titan food? You could've gone to Garrison-"

"I'd rather not sit patiently and await my death," you sharply cut off, starting to step away. "And for your own good, it's better to die now pretending to be heroes then sit and get fat like the ugly pigs in Sina..."

---

"I don't really think we should be wandering around at night Jean." Armin piped up, not liking the idea of wandering around in the dark. "W-What if someone catches us?"

"It's not like we're doing any harm. I just want to see if maybe Mikasa is around looking for Eren." He threw in a light laugh. "If anyone asks, just say we can just say we got lost looking for the bathrooms. They can't expect the new guys to know where everything is yet."

"There's more then one problem with that plan Jean..." Armin muttered mainly to himself as they continued walking through the dark. "Besides, what's the point of seeing her? All she'll do is give you the cold shoulder...especially when I'm with you."

Jean froze, an unfocused Armin bumping into him and quickly pushed away. "I guess you're right."

 "Are you okay Jean?"

"Fine." He turned around, brushing past the smaller teen as started back to the bunks. "I...I think I'm just going to head back for now. Feel free to see Mikasa in my stead."

Armin spun around, ready to chase after Jean. "Wait-"

"Hey you!" He froze at the unfamiliar female voice that shouted at him from before. "Don't you realize that it's the middle of the night!? You shouldn't be wandering around even if you're new."

He turned around quickly, saluting and hanging his head. "Please excuse us. He needed help finding the bathroom and dragged me out. We'll be heading back right now!"

"Well," your voice hesitated in your throat for a minute in surprise at the respect. "I guess I can let you two off with a warning seeing as how you didn't technically do anything. Just don't let me catch you wandering again, understood?"

"O-Of course!" He stuttered, turning around to follow the other newbie. You stood watching until they vanished wondering why you felt something stir in your chest.

Days passed by with their normal drag but with eyes glued onto that one trainee to be sure not a toe came out of line. You were more surprised how devoted he was, always working diligently no matter the task.

The morning after the incident that one night you found him with the Jeager kid and another girl (who was obviously another trainee). But as every morning, you sat in your normal seat and tried to ignore the newbies sitting in the recently-emptied ones.

It went by without notice; people went past the walls and many didn't come back. Then the new recruits would come along and take their seats as if nothing had ever happened. Generally people had gone to and from so many times maybe nothing did happen.

But days passed with their normal dreariness. Some mourned, most worked and others learned. Within days you'd be headed out with the Legion for a journey outside the walls. Who knows; maybe your spot would be the next one taken.

The night before you arrived extremely late to dinner due to preparation for the day following. Not many remained but the blond-haired boy and a few others. Without anyone else you decided that you'd might as well just sit with him.

As you approached, his eyes flickered from the work on the table to your figure and stiffening as if he had done something wrong. You yourself flinched and paused to wonder if maybe this was a dumb idea. But noticing this, his for, relaxed.

"I'm sorry...I was just wondering if I could sit here for dinner tonight...? All of my comrades are already sleeping." You murmured, sitting down in front of him embarrassed. "Unless you don't want me to."

"N-No, it's fine." He smiled shyly then turned his attention back to the papers in front of him. "Just some last-minute studying...if there's anything I'm able to do...it's remembering where I belong..."

Silently you began eating and ignoring the comment as a quiet shroud covered over you. But as minute by minute passed by, the nerves seemed to settle and he finally piped up with,"are you ready for tomorrow?"

"As ready as anyone willing to die for humanity could be." You laughed - most to yourself - and looked back over at the blond. "I don't think you'd want to give names...it only gets you more attached."

"I'm guessing you've been here for awhile then?"

"Too long," you sighed, looking down at your untouched food. A laugh was forced once more as you started poking at the unappetizing meal in front of you. "Far too long...I probably won't be around after this damn mission..."

"How could you say that?" You looked up to see his intense glare boring into your (e/c) eyes. "How could you possibly think that you're going to die tomorrow?"

"Because..." The voice you had before, so full of confidence was now lost. "Because no one stays this long unless they're the corporal or the captain...I won't be around much longer."

"Don't you have a family? Someone that cares if you die?"

"The only people that cared are all..." You trailed off, avoiding his eye and growling. "They all damn-well knew what they were getting into...I should've talked her out of it..."

"You'll be fine." He finally mustered back, starting to pack up for the night. "I swear on my life that tomorrow, everything is going to go over well and you'll be back here."

"You think so?" Both of you shared an unreassuring smile, ending when you held your hand out. "__________."

 "Armin." And he took it.

---

"How could something already be wrong?" You hissed as you loaded the smoke gun and shot it into the air. "It's been less then an hour and our formation is being destroyed..."

"We'll be alright __________, stop your worrying." Your friend smiled back with such a naive expression. "I'm sure it'll be taken care of and we'll all go along normally."

"Yeah, I'll bet so." You rolled your eyes and sighed, trying to keep calm although you were slowly loosing your mind. Something was bound to go wrong and you could feel it. "Let's just continue with the mission..."
Minutes passed by slowly, ever so slowly. Your mind wandered back to past events, your head lowering at the thoughts buzzing through your mind. That's how you missed the figure slowly looming behind you. You know, that was impossible to notice until your comrade was screaming in fear and in an instant was crushed.

There wasn't even a moment to react before you were tossed off your horse, tumbling on the ground. As if it would matter, the titan was already staring down at you with a mischievous glint in it's eye. You watched her lifting her foot up, hovering over your smaller body with time going at a snail's pace.

Death stared you in the face and in the last moment, you saw you and Armin shaking hands, his promise that you'd be alright and that you'd be going back with the rest of the squad. One last time, you heavily breathed and waited until everything went black, everything turning dark and fuzzy in an instant.

 "Armin."
